Kangaroo Mother Care Reduces Risk of Sepsis for Babies

A new analysis published in the medical journal EclinicalMedicine, finds that immediate kangaroo mother care (KMC) (also known as skin-to-skin) reduces the risk of sepsis among small and preterm babies. According to the report, vulnerable newborns who receive immediate KMC-which combines skin-to-skin contact with exclusive breastfeeding or provision of breastmilk-reduced suspected sepsis by 18%, sepsis-related deaths by 36%, and overall deaths by 25%.

Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s response to an infection becomes harmful. It can affect people of all ages, including newborns. Premature infants are particularly vulnerable to sepsis due to their immature immune systems.

How can Kangaroo Mother Care  help in preventing and managing sepsis in your baby:

  1. Enhanced immune response: KMC has been shown to strengthen a baby’s immune system. The close contact between you and your baby during KMC helps transfer beneficial bacteria from your skin to your baby’s, promoting the growth of healthy microorganisms. These beneficial bacteria can help protect your baby against harmful pathogens and reduce the risk of infections, including sepsis.

  2. Early detection and intervention: When practicing KMC, you can monitor your baby’s condition closely. You can observe for signs and symptoms of sepsis, such as fever, rapid breathing, poor feeding, and lethargy. Early detection is crucial, as prompt medical intervention can significantly improve the sepsis outcome.

  3. Breast milk benefits: KMC supports exclusive breastfeeding, which provides your baby with vital antibodies and nutrients that strengthen their immune system. Breast milk is specifically tailored to your baby’s needs and contains protective factors that help fight off infections. By breastfeeding during KMC, you provide important immune support to your baby, reducing their susceptibility to sepsis.

  4. Temperature regulation: Temperature instability is a risk factor for sepsis in premature infants. KMC helps regulate your baby’s body temperature, reducing the chances of hypothermia or overheating. A stable body temperature supports overall physiological stability and reduces the stress on your baby’s body, thereby lowering the risk of developing sepsis.

  5. Emotional support: KMC promotes bonding between you and your baby. Emotional well-being and reduced stress levels in both the mother and baby have been shown to have positive effects on the immune system. By creating a nurturing and supportive environment through KMC, you contribute to your baby’s overall well-being, including their immune health.

It’s important to remember that while Kangaroo Mother Care can be beneficial, it does not replace medical care. If you suspect any signs of sepsis in your baby, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention. Your healthcare team will provide appropriate diagnostic tests, treatment, and support.
